The World Underwater Federation (CMAS) was founded in 1959 under the will of the late Jacques-Yves Cousteau, its first president and the inventor of scuba diving and as such, created the world's first standards and certification for scuba diving.
With a global presence in over 130 federations on 5 continents, CMAS is also associated with various international sporting bodies such as the Olympic Council and is recognized by UNESCO as an important NGO for underwater archeology and the protection of underwater marine environment and heritage.
In addition to organizing international underwater sporting events, it is at the forefront of technical and scientific research and development.
