ABOUT WORLD OCEAN DAY

World Ocean Day unites and rallies the world to protect and restore our blue planet. World Ocean Day supports collaborative conservation, working with its global network of youths and organizational leaders in more than 140 countries, and providing free and customizable promotional and actionable resources. World Ocean Day is powered by the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council. For more information, please visit www.worldoceanday.org

ABOUT UN WORLD OCEAN DAY

In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly decided that, as of 2009, 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Oceans Day”. On this day, we have an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably. Future generations will also depend on the ocean for their livelihood. Civil society, science centers, research institutions, NGOs, businesses in the private and financial sector, communities and governments all around the world mobilize millions of people around local and global events. Together with the United Nations and our partners, we celebrate all that the ocean gives us every day: from the oxygen we breathe to the inspiration that moves our poets.  For more information, please visit www.unworldoceansday.org

ABOUT UNITED NATION DECADE OF THE OCEAN SCIENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

On 5 December 2017, the United Nations proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, to be held from 2021 to 2030. This Decade will provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries’ actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and more particularly to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Decade will provide a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to create a new foundation, across the science-policy interface, to strengthen the management of our oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity. Delivering Science for the Future We Want – Ocean Science combines a variety of disciplines (physical, geological and chemical oceanography as well as marine biology) that study and provide data on the global marine environment (marine organisms, ecosystem dynamics, ocean currents, waves, geophysical fluids dynamics, plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor as well as fluxes of various chemical substances and physical properties within the Ocean and across its boundaries). Over the decades, Ocean Science evolved to integrate new societal needs and encourage new partnerships among oceanographers working in different disciplines leading to new discoveries about the ocean’s role in climate regulation and coastal ocean processes. Ocean Science can support business operations (shipping industry, fisheries and aquaculture, etc…) as well as conservation and management activities, or coastal communities by predicting Ocean hazards, preventing and mitigating disaster risks. For example, the discovery of oceanic eddies has been important for an understanding of ocean circulation, propagation of sound in the ocean, fisheries productivity, and other ocean processes. For more information, please visit www.oceandecade.org

ABOUT ADEX OCEAN CITIZENS

TOGETHER WE PLEDGE AGAINST SINGLE-USE PLASTIC – First world nations to third world countries. We are facing the same environmental epidemic – plastic pollution. As convenient, durable, light and versatile, this 111 years old invention takes up to 400 years to decompose and has to affect the lives of people and living creatures for the next 16 generations to come. The excessive and irresponsible consumption of plastics is impacting ocean health and biodiversity. Some research has reported that by 2050, there could be more plastics in the ocean than fish if our current consumption habits are unchanged*. 8,000,000 tons of plastics are dumped in the ocean each year. China, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam are reported as countries dumping the most plastic waste than any other region in the world from its shared river systems and waterways as the conduits of this problem**. In Singapore, we consume about 1.76 billion kilogramme of plastic items a year of plastic waste is discarded every year but less than 20% of plastics are being recycled! *** But, these nations have since then implemented changes through the policies to curb this worldly plastic pollution issue. On ADEX 2019 edition, celebrating its 25th silver milestone, uw360° together with the congregation of esteemed ‘Friends of ADEX’ take on this opportunity of raising awareness about the polluting impacts of plastic packaging by taking a pledge to the refusal, reuse, reduce and recycle of single-use plastic products in ADEX exhibition hall!

REFUSE disposable plastic whenever and wherever possible. Choose items that are not packaged in plastic, and carry your own bags, containers and utensils. Say ‘no straw, please.’

REUSE durable, non-toxic straws, utensils, to-go containers, bottles, bags, and other everyday items. Choose glass, paper, stainless steel, wood, ceramic and bamboo over plastic.

REDUCE your plastic footprint. Cut down on your consumption of goods that contain excessive plastic packaging and parts. If it will leave behind plastic trash, don’t buy it.

RECYCLE what you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse. Pay attention to the entire life cycle of items you bring into your life, from source to manufacturing to distribution to disposal. SAY ‘NO’ SINGLE-USE ITEMS @ ASIA DIVE EXPO (ADEX) 2019 series of shows: Plastic bags, Plastic straws, Disposable cutleries (includes cups, fork and spoons), Single-use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles (includes mineral water bottles). SUPPORTING PARTNERS

ABOUT BLU HOPE

The creation of the Blu Hope campaign came about because of the COVID-19 pandemic! The British High Commission began the Green is GREAT Plastics campaign because of the exposé that the UK and other developed countries were illegally exporting plastic waste to Malaysia. The UK and Malaysian Governments have worked closely together to rectify the situation. Our first event was the joint hosting of the VVIP Malaysian Premiere of Blue Planet II and Green is GREAT Exhibition attended by HRHs Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Tengku Zatashah and Malaysian Minister of the Environment Yeo Bee Yin. The second event was the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance Showcase at the Commonwealth Observance Day in conjunction with the Royal Commonwealth Society. The third event was going to be the Queen’s Birthday Party on World Oceans Day. However, the COVID-19 pandemic meant Queen’s Birthday Parties were cancelled and the idea was born to take the Green is GREAT Plastics campaign digital. The British High Commission were very fortunate that we had met our three key partners that alongside Alison Collingridge, Head of Marketing and GREAT Campaign have helped make Blu Hope happen.

Simon Christopher, founder of Scubazoo and TimorBlue has been working with us from the start. Simon, a marine zoologist by background, is a storyteller who has produced countless underwater films in the Coral Triangle and is based in Sabah, Malaysia. After running Scubazoo for 23 years (including online channel Subazoo.tv), Simon setup TimorBlue end-2018 to fast track deep impact marine conservation dove-tailed with maximum global awareness about the Coral Triangle from Timor-Leste. Having introduced Mura’s ground-breaking Cat-HTR technology to Timor-Leste and Malaysia in 2019, Simon is excited about harnessing the true power of storytelling with the BluHope campaign to help drive much needed, pivotal – if transformational change leading up to, and throughout UNESCO’s Ocean Decade https://oceandecade.org.

Geoff Brighty is an Environmental Consultant and Non-Executive Director for Mura Technology, one of the British High Commission’s Commonwealth Observance Day and 5 Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance Showcase sponsors. Mura Technology’s CatHTR™ (Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor) process can recycle waste plastic that is currently considered ‘unrecyclable’ into valuable chemicals and oils for use in the manufacture of new plastic materials helping to deliver a plastic neutral circular economy. Geoff visited Kuala Lumpur in early March 2020 to attend our Commonwealth Day event.

Jo Ruxton is the Founder and Director of Plastic Oceans UK and Co-Producer of ‘A Plastic Ocean’. Jo was the first to alert the world to the perils of plastic pollution in the ocean. It was Jo that convinced Sir David Attenborough to lobby the BBC to include plastic pollution in Blue Planet II. Plastic Oceans UK have developed a wealth of education resources to help raise awareness amongst the youth of the issues surrounding plastic pollution and to teach children to become plastic intelligent. Jo is a supporter of Mura Technology’s Cat-HTR™ and came to Kuala Lumpur to support our CCOA Showcase and meet with the Malaysian Education Sector.

This core team has helped bring together strategic partners, media partners and celebrities to combine resources, knowledge, networks and expertise, to build an international campaign.

Blu Hope is being supported by many people including Sir David Attenborough, Dr Sylvia Earle, Paul Rose, the Foreign & Commonwealth network across South-East Asia, Australasia and Pacific Islands, as well as the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, COP26 and The Rt. Hon. Lord Zac Goldsmith, Minister of State of Pacific and the Environment. We would like to thank everyone for their support. For more information, please visit www.bluhope.org
