BREAK
10:00-10:45 Dr Frauke Tillmans What Do We Know About Rebreather Safety?
What kills rebreather divers? In this talk we’ll be taking a look at the rapidly growing rebreather community, including the accidents that have occurred and some numbers that may help estimate the size of the rebreather community. The number of newly certified CCR divers has increased from an estimated 2,000 in 2013 to over 3,000 today, which is in line with the growth in CCR sales. This talk will also cover what we know about the confirmed CCR fatalities from 2013 to 2022, including root cause analyses of the cause of death where possible. Finally, we’ll also highlight challenges in data acquisition and analysis.

WreckSploration will also be presenting the recent discovery of the wreck of the Dutch Submarine the HNLMS K XI in Perth Waters.
BREAK
17:00-18:00 Peter Buzzacott, Beth Jones, Aren Leishman Scuba diving may cause venous gas emboli (VGE) in tissues, due to supersaturated inert gas. Our research team from Western Australia have been looking at

  • how diving VGE are measured
  • what sort of diving researchers use to generate bubbles,
  • and what factors are known to influence bubbles in scuba

After describing all this, we will conclude with recent efforts to develop an empirically- based bubble model, and wondering aloud what the near future might hold for diving bubble-models.

TIME SPEAKER TOPICS
Richard Taylor
10:00-10:45 Josh Richards, William Passos Double or Nothing: Pushing the Limits in Mount Gambier’s Cave Systems
The Soggy Wombats cave exploration team has repeatedly discovered new extensions in well known caves throughout the Mount Gambier region using a fusion of cave geology, photogrammetry, and advanced survey techniques. This presentation will dive into the pivotal role of cave geology played in the discovery of Englebrecht’s Extension, the groundbreaking use of photogrammetry helped reveal the Iddlebiddy Extension, and how the integration and refinement of these techniques has recent led to the discovery of the “Crazy Wombat Tunnel” in Pines Cave. Will and Josh will highlight the cutting-edge tools and methodologies transforming underwater cave exploration, pushing past the traditional limits, and reshaping our understanding of Australia’s richest underwater cave region.

Buying your first Rebreather
Rebreather diving opens up a whole new world of possibilities for divers—longer bottom times, silent exploration, and access to deeper, more challenging environments. But with so many different units on the market, choosing your first rebreather can feel overwhelming. The most common question I get asked from divers wanting to get into rebreather diving is which unit they should buy. Kevin will guide you through the key factors to consider when selecting a rebreather to suit your diving goals, experience level, and budget. From understanding the differences between manual, and fully electronic CCRs to evaluating training requirements, maintenance, and real-world usability, we’ll break down what you need to know before making this important investment.
