EVENT HIGHLIGHT

Let’s Create History Together and Be a Part of ADEX Ocean Citizen – The Very First Largest Beach & Underwater CleanUp World Record Attempt

Recognized for having one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with azure blue waters, rich marine biodiversity, the largest group of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the world’s paradise! Yet, it is possible there is no place remaining on the planet untouched by plastic.

Approximately eight million tons of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans daily and there might be around 5.25 trillion plastic pieces floating in the open ocean, collectively weighing around 269,000 tonnes. In Malé alone, more than 280,000 plastic water bottles are used daily and 104 million non-biodegradable plastic bags were imported to the Maldives in 2018. On August 13, 2020, it was discovered that the Maldives is engulfed with “microplastic pollution” and they could be smaller than 0.4mm in width. Such discovery would negatively impact the health of the ecosystem, marine organisms, and local island communities!

VISION

Celebrating and actioning towards impact, in conjunction with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), Asia Dive Expo [ADEX], HighRise and the Republic of Maldives aims to forge a sustainable future by creating an awareness and motivation by reversing the cycle of decline in ocean health and gathering ocean stakeholders to ensure ocean science can improve conditions for sustainable development of the Ocean.

MISSION

Initiated by the ADEX Ocean Citizen movement, which was launched in conjunction with the ADEX show in April 2019, which aspires to commit to the international solidarity built around the sustainable management of the ocean and encourage the adoption of sustainable habits for the protection and preservation of the ocean’s health and the future generation thus we invite all ocean citizens to join us in making an impact, while making history, for an afternoon of “world record attempt of the very first largest beach and underwater cleanup”!

ADEX Ocean Citizen has a dream and we look forward to actualizing it – this December 12th in the Maldives at 12 pm, we hope to create history by breaking the current world record of the largest beach and underwater cleanup!

Assembling like-minded ocean citizens, lovers and divers to scour the depth of the Indian Ocean and sieve through the Maldivian beaches to remove single-use plastic pollution and marine debris away from its natural environment and in promoting awareness of Maldives rich marine biodiversity, environmental conservation and encouraging citizen science.

COVID-19 TRAVEL SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Who can go?

All visitors with proof of a negative Covid test can travel to the Maldives at present. As of February 22, there are over 140 resorts and over 330 guesthouses open and serving international visitors.

What are the restrictions?

All arrivals other than Maldives citizens must present a certificate of a negative PCR test carried out within the 96 hours prior to departure, clearly showing the name and address of the laboratory, as well as the date of the sample taken. The result must be attached to the Traveler Health Declaration form which must be submitted online within 24 hours prior to arrival.
Visitors are asked to download the national contact tracing app, TraceEkee, and use it during their journey. Tourists are allowed to split stays between hotels. However, if you spend more than 48 hours in the Greater Malé area, you must take another PCR test before moving elsewhere. Since the discovery of the new UK variant in late December, all travellers arriving from the UK, including transiting passengers, must undergo a 10-day quarantine. All passengers leaving the airport on arrival will have a health check. Travellers returning to the United States will need to show proof of a negative Covid test within 72 hours of departure in order to be allowed back into the country. Most resorts and guesthouses can facilitate these.

What can visitors expect?

A “normal” vacation, thanks to the isolation of most hotels and the fact that the vast majority of visitors stay in-resort rather than venture out. Locals are subject to restrictions, those going to and from the airport are exempt. Split stays between different hotels are allowed if the hotels meet government requirements. Requests for split stays must be made to the Ministry of
Tourism at least 48 hours before travel. Expect also for your resort to have some rules — especially a temperature check on arrival, and masks to be worn indoors. As most items in shops must be shipped to the Maldives, some things can get pricey — you should bring
things like masks and hand sanitiser with you to avoid spending while on the island chain.
