DARREN BRUNTON (UK)
Darren is the Vice Chairman of Commercial Diving Association –Singapore, he started diving when he was 18 in the British Forces, in 1990 he commenced working in the Commercial Diving Industry. He has since worked offshore in the Northsea, Asia, Mexico and Argentina as a Saturation Diver and Saturation Supervisor, in 2004 he established and KBA Training Centre based in Singapore.
DAVID MCCANN (IRELAND)
David McCann is an Environmental Officer for Scuba Junkie SEAS. He hails from Ireland where he gained his BSc Marine Biology and MSc Environmental Management at QUB. His current work includes running a turtle hatchery and rehabilitation centre and carrying out reef health check surveys and reef restoration in Sabah, Malaysia.
GEMMA THOMAS (UNITED KINGDOM)
Gemma started diving when she moved to Singapore in 2008 and was immediately hooked. She is fortunate enough to have travelled to much of the region, and takes part in conservation projects. Her real passion is for teaching. This led Gemma to become Singapore’s first female GUE instructor. Scuba diving can be a life changing experience, especially to someone who has a disability.
Gemma is also a Diveheart instructor and is working to make diving more accessible to those with disabilities here in Singapore.
KARENNE TUN (SINGAPORE)
Karenne joined NParks in 2013, after a 18 year circuit within academia, non-profit organisation and private environmental consultancy. During that time, she obtained her PhD from the National University of Singapore where she focussed on developing diagnostic tools for coral reef monitoring and management. Karenne’s interest in the marine environment was ignited as an undergraduate, where, over the years, her fascination turned to concern at their rapid decline, particularly in the Southeast Asian region. Karenne subsequent work at NUS focussed on studying the impacts of anthropogenic activities on coral reefs, before moving onto coordinating coral reef monitoring efforts in the Southeast Asian region. Karenne’s current work at NParks covers issues related to the management and conservation of Singapore’s coastal and marine environment and the biodiversity they support. Her team is also overseeing the establishment of Singapore’s first Marine Park - the Sisters’ Islands Marine Park.
LAURIE WILSON (USA)
Laurie Wilson is Founder of the Blue Ocean Network, a Platinum Pro 5000 diver and Women Divers Hall of Fame honouree. Laurie has worked in many aspects of the industry, including dive stores, resorts, live aboards, marine non-profits, marine sanctuaries, and more. She is credited with spearheading professional development in the dive tourism industry, bringing training to more than 12,000 dive and travel professionals. In addition to her speaking engagements at regional dive shows, her annual Dive Travel Conference ran in conjunction with the DEMA Show for 10 years.
More recently, Laurie joined the leadership team at “Blue The Dive.org” - a volunteer cross-stakeholder movement that promotes dive industry sustainability.
LEON BOEY (SINGAPORE)
Leon Boey is a GUE, HSA and PADI instructor based in Bali. He runs dive education centers in Singapore, Bali, and Jakarta. Having dived for so long, and seeing the changes in the reef over the years, he’s compelled to make a difference by dedicating his dive company to marine conservation and implementing conservation activities on the ground.
Marthen is the Coral Triangle Center’s Field Learning Sites Manager. He is in charge of providing technical, planning, and policy support to ensure that the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Bali and the emerging Banda Islands MPA Network in Maluku, eastern Indonesia are effectively managed. He is also helping develop new MPAs in Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Prior to CTC, Marthen worked for The Nature Conservancy where he held various roles in marine protected area management. He is a member of the Council for Association of Diving School (ADS) Indonesia.
RANDALL ARAUZ (COSTA RICA)
Randall Arauz is a Costa Rican biologist with experience studying fisheries interactions with sea turtles and sharks in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, as well as in political processes to establish binding conservation policy that mitigates or eliminates these impacts. He is currently a PEW Marine Fellow in Marine Conservation.
ROBERT SCALES (CANADA)
Robert Scales is a Canadian living in Bali since 2011. He is the co-founder of Ceningan Divers, Ceningan Resort and the Ceningan Eco Trust based on a small 7 sq. kilometre island located on the east coast of Bali. Robert is a former media executive and college professor with a passion for sustainable development and marine conservation. He describes himself as a simplicity expert, resort owner, scuba diver, renaissance man & bon vivant!

YU KOOYU GU (CHINA)
As a naval architect, Kooyu Gu, Yu has more than 15 years working experience in the ship registry, ship design, ocean engineering and shipbuilding project management. He is also the designer and project manager of MY ‘SEAISEE I’ and MV ‘French Polynesia Master’. He will be sharing his experience in designing and project managing 5-star Liveaboard Safari Diving Boats, and the key points regarding Safety, Environmental, Energy-efficiency and comfort!
